Hackermurmur Show Spring 2015 @ Mothership Hackermoms
Mar 7 @ 11:00 am – 1:00 pm

Hackermurmur Spring Show 2015!
We have some amazing work going up for the spring. Holly Wach whose drawings small, medium and huge will be on display, will give a presentation about the process of brainstorming, research, sketches to final image. Anya Sophe Behn will display audio pieces, cascading and hanging sculptures. She will present show some of her live art making videos.

Nearly all Hackermoms are participating in one of our art shows, which are organized for the sake of our very own community. So, I hope you’ll take this opportunity to see this unusual work, as well as to get to know some of our new members in attendance.

Holly Wach:

” As I draw lions I feel the raw, immediate expression I have yearned for since childhood. The beauty of the lion lies in decisive boldness without regret, hesitation or deceit. The female character in my drawings exhibit a sense of security, calmness, and yet tenacity in the face of her adversary and companion. As a result, the viewer feels the tension of a dangerously affectionate exchange.

The raw mark-making quality of charcoal and pastel challenge me to tame my subjects without losing their spirit. The work takes on a raw energy while leaving traces of the process behind. The layering of lines and, the rhythm of strokes mark the characters’ intimacy with agitation. As the piece unfolds, the tension of the additive as well as subtractive process builds texture and activity leaving rough and realized gentle elements.

My work is deliberately representational in order to tell a universal story through recognizable characters, ideally expressing itself without explanation. When I am orchestrating my subjects, the medium, and the story starts to unfold, I am bulletproof, alive, a part of the world versus just watching.”

Anya Sophe Behn:

” I am inspired by strong feelings and ideas, which sometimes arrive in dreams. I make figures in clay because clay easily translates my feelings and intense emotions.

When feelings engulf you, you may not be in control; so I leave rough textures in the clay to translate that. For example, when cracks or other anomalies happen which continue to develop the piece, I do not change them.

The concepts I work with are: a desire to foster our connection to each other despite our socialized perceptions; awareness of the position and status of women in society; viewpoints of gender; and race relations. I base my work on these issues through historical and personal experiences, wherein I notice the effects our perceived history has had on our psychology and actions today.”

Failure Club (Members Only) @ Mothership HackerMoms
Mar 11 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Morgan Spurlock, Director of Supersize Me and all around idea guy, came up with this divine/diabolical idea of the Failure Club. In it, you tackle something that you deeply want but terrifies you, and you try to fail at it in a big way. HackerMoms do that together as a weekly group to vent, listen, applaud and encourage each other to do what scares us and still survive. We’ll have a failure wall for our trophies. It’s not so scary when we’re together, and the failure wall becomes a wall of pride – because in order to fail that big, we must really, really try.Tearful inspiration: http://video.search.yahoo.com/search/;_ylt=AjUT7PDDA0OJwhVI3usIvNISkUIv?fr=uh3_screen_vert_gs&type=2button&p=failure%20club.

The Failure Club is for HackerMoms members only to preserve a safe space and sense of commitment. Each Failure Club lasts 3 months long and projects should fit in a 3 month plan that ends with an achievable goal. Each meeting is spent working on the next step of your dream coming true. Email info@hackermoms.org with questions. Fail fast and start again! Members can sign up for childcare at: http://hackermoms.eventbrite.com.
